In the state of New York alone, about 5 billion eggs are sold each year. Now, since the recent egg recall of over half a billion eggs for salmonella bacteria, two New York state legislators are announcing their plans to create a bill that would require farmers in New York to vaccinate their hens against the bacteria. State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh argue that vaccinations would only cost the state about one penny per dozen of eggs.

In front of a Lower East Side supermarket on Sunday, Kavanagh stated, “The massive outbreaks of food-borne illness in recent months leave no doubt that our food safety system is failing us, threatening everyone’s well-being and sometimes costing people’s lives”. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has made some changes in regulations since the recall, however they have yet to require vaccinations. ”If the FDA is unwilling to take the lead, we should start here in New York,” said Squadron.

There is an average 142,000 cases of egg-related salmonella food poisoning reported each year in the United States.

The workers are employed by a pyrotechnics company that is used by the stadium to produce fireworks displays after games. Officials have not released the workers’ names or conditions, however a family member of one of the workers told reporters that he was in stable condition. Investigators are looking into what caused the accident that injured the two workers.

A pregnant New York City woman was killed in a tragic single-vehicle accident this past Sunday when the car she was riding in hydro-planed and ran into a wall.

The car was traveling down Route 9W with five passengers. The woman’s husband, 2-year old child, sister, and brother-in-law were not injured in the accident. The brother-in-law was driving the vehicle.

Investigators say it was raining at the time of the accident, which caused the car to hydro-plane and run into a wall off of the highway.

The woman has been identified as Esther Shaindel German, a preschool teacher from the Brooklyn.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to German’s family and friends during this difficult time.

37-year old Beatriz Blas of Wyandanch screamed when her arm became caught in a packing machine. A coworker quickly rushed to her aid, freed her from the machine, and picked up her severed arm. Witnesses to the accident and company officials said they were unsure of how Blas’ arm became stuck in the machine.

Blas was initially airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment, but later transferred to Stony Brook Medical Center where doctors are trying to reattach her arm.

A fire started at a Long Island Railroad station yesterday morning around 11 AM. The fire broke out at the East Jamaica station but was quickly contained. LIRR spokesperson Sal Arena stated that there were no reports of casualties from the fire.

The fire left thousands of passengers stranded at the 10 of 11 LIRR stations that were closed down due to the fire. The 10 stations were forced to close down after the fire damaged the railroad’s main control switch. The main control switch allows trains to switch tracks at the Jamaica station.

The LIRR has an estimated 240,000 daily commuters.

Five New York City hospitals are implementing three year programs to reduce medical malpractice using the $3 million distributed between them by the federal government. In June, the Obama administration approved $25 million of funds to be used to reduce medical malpractice in state health departments, medical centers, and universities. The $3 million granted to the NYC hospitals are a part of a plan to test out a NYC judge’s approach to incidents of medical malpractice using judge-directed negotiations.

Earlier this month, a man was killed and six others were injured in a tragic two-car accident in the Bronx.

The accident occurred after a van began to take an illegal U-turn in front of a blue Lincoln taxi. The taxi was traveling eastbound on West Kingsbridge Road when it swerved, trying to avoid the turning van. Still, the two collided and the taxi was sent over a curb and into a bus stop.

Police and emergency officials arrived on the scene quickly and transported seven people to local area hospitals. The taxi driver and two others were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, three victims were taken to St. Barnabas, and one was transported to Montefiore Medical Center.

Marcelino Adraneda died in an ambulance en route to St. Barnabas. One woman lost her foot in the car accident and another man was in critical condition with a punctured lung.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Adraneda’s family and friends.

Last Friday morning, 76-year old Robert Borchers was wrongfully killed crossing Queens Boulevard in Kew Gardens. Borchers was crossing the street when a marked Correction Department vehicle heading southbound struck him. Emergency officials transported Borchers to Jamaica Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses to the accident told investigators that Borchers had the right of way. However, police officers stated that he crossed without a walk signal. A recent investigation by the Daily News which surveyed whether or not specific traffic lights provided enough time for seniors to cross at has some wondering if Borchers possibly had the right of way but could not cross before the ‘do not walk’ signal came on.

Queens Boulevard is notorious for pedestrian accidents. Between 1993 and 2000, 72 pedestrians were killed on the boulevard.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Borchers’ family and friends during this difficult time.
